Gothenburg and its surrounding region boast a comprehensive and efficient public transportation system managed by Västtrafik, a municipally owned company. This network encompasses a range of options, including buses, trams, commuter trains, and ferries, ensuring easy travel within the region. To plan your journeys, Västtrafik’s website provides comprehensive information on fares, routes, and real-time travel schedules, while their app is a convenient tool for those traveling with smartphones. With frequent and reliable services, commuting, even over longer distances, is made simple and straightforward.

Buying tickets

Please note that you cannot buy tickets from drivers on buses, boats, or trams. Instead, you need to buy your tickets in one of the following ways:

Use the app Västtrafik ToGo. The app accepts major debit cards such as Mastercard and Visa.

Only card payment is available at a vending machine on the tram. Buses do not have vending machines.

In a shop displaying the Västtrafik logo, such as Pressbyrån or 7-Eleven.

Most often you will find difficulties trying to pay in cash.

Walk – or bike

Travelling within the city of Gothenburg offers a range of options, including cycling and walking. For those without their own bicycle, the convenient Styr & Ställ rental bike system is available at various locations throughout the city. With a nominal fee, you can easily rent a bike for daily use, providing a fun, eco-friendly, and cost-effective mode of transportation.
